1910 The birth of the term HAM. Even though Radio was in its infancy it had already demonstrated its great value. Government Stations, Ships, and Costal Stations were born. In that day, spark was king and every station occupied the same wavelength--or, more accurately perhaps, every station occupied the whole spectrum with its broad spark signal. All stations and the increasingly numerous amateur operators all competed for time and signal supremacy in each other's receivers. Many of the amateur stations were very powerful. Two amateurs, working across town, could effectively jam all the other operators in the area. When this happened, frustrated commercial operators would call the ship whose weaker signals had been blotted out by the amateurs and say "SRI OM THOSE #&$! HAMS ARE JAMMING THE SIGNAL." The meaning of 'HAM" in that day was; a hog, a showoff, someone stealing the show. It was applied to the amateur radio operators because they hogged the frequency spectrum and were considered a poor operator by the commercial operators. Amateurs, possibly unfamiliar with the real meaning of the term as commercial operators meant it, picked it up and applied it to themselves with pride. As the years advanced, the original meaning completely disappeared and all amateur radio operators today proudly declare that they are HAM Radio Operators.

Есть еще значение слова "ham" как "ветчина". Это значение никак не связано с радиолюбительской связью?
